New People and Places at LookUp

LookUp Announces a new Executive Director!

We are thrilled to introduce you to Sam Carpenter, LookUp’s new Executive Director, our next gen leader who will bring her energy and enthusiasm for youth and LookUp’s mission to empower and amplify youth leaders who are creating a healthy, safe and responsible digital world. She is new to the role, but comes to us as an already active member of the LookUp community.

As a LookUp Board member, Sam contributed her wisdom and guidance on the organizing committee of the Y4Y iSummit and as an evaluator of the LookUp Innovator and Leadership Lab programming. Her previous experience as a fundraiser for both grassroots and established philanthropic communities and as a consultant for nonprofit clients will serve LookUp well as we continue to grow. With a background in nonprofit consulting, Sam brings deep strategic and vision-making experience as well as her own hands-on startup experience growing the Bay Area nonprofit startup, YCore, from an idea to a staffed nonprofit. Sam most recently comes to us from her role as the Program Manager for Dartmouth College’s Magnuson Center for Entrepreneurship where she built programming that fosters a robust, active, and supportive community of alum and student entrepreneurs. These experiences could not be more aligned with LookUp’s plans for the new Cohort of 2022 social innovators who will begin their journey with LookUp and Sam in March 2022.

LookUp bids Farewell to Julie Barrett O’Brien

As excited as we are to welcome Sam and begin to build a centralized base of operations in the Bay Area, it is with deep gratitude and a touch of sadness we say good-bye to Julie Barrett O’Brien, our inaugural Executive Director who led us fearlessly during our first few years. Julie has now taken the helm at the Cambridge, MA based OpenBiome. Congratulations are very much in order for Julie as she returns to her roots in global health.

As many of you know, Julie brought her many years of experience in global health, from strategy to operations, to LookUp. She was central to the creation of a stand up organization. Together we formed a sympathico team where Julie helped us actualize my visionary idea to enlist Gen Z’s leadership and innovation and to shift the tide on the escalating youth mental health crisis, especially as it relates to the digital world.

In her tenure with us, from ideation to our recent Y4Y iSummit, Julie brought her exceptional wisdom, experience and joyful zest for life to create a lasting legacy with LookUp. Julie will be among our amazing adult allies for life.

Thank you, Julie!

LookUp moves to San Francisco’s Bay Area!

With Sam and I living 15 minutes from each other, we’re in the process of moving our base of operations to the West Coast. Now in person in San Francisco’s East Bay, we are setting up meetings with impact partners, school allies, and donors. We’ve gone for walks and convened at outdoor cafes, with a special affinity for the Morcom Rose Garden. As we continue to connect to more youth around the world, committed to creating healthier and safer online experiences, we hope to foster an in person community by connecting students, adult allies, and donors with pilot programs that we can bring to other communities around the world.

Once we are over the most recent COVID surge and it is safe to meet in person again, we will plan to host an in person welcome party to meet Sam - stay tuned!

-Susan Reynolds, Founder, LookUp
